John Lennon’s first posthumous single “Woman” peaks to No.1 on this day in 1981
Released on January 1981, roughly one month after John Lennon’s death, “Woman” (B-Side “Beautiful Boys” by Yoko Ono), included on the 1980 “Double Fantasy” album, peaked to No.1 on the UK charts on February 3, 1981. The song proved to be one of Lennon’s most popular ones and a sample of where his career could be going during the 1980’s, as he stated in an interview for Rolling Stone magazine on 5 December 1980,”Woman” was a “grown-up version” of The Beatles song “Girl” (composed by him). In the US the single peaked at number 2 on Billboard Hot 100, kept out of the top spot by REO Speedwagon’s hit “Keep on Loving You” and Blondie’s hit “Rapture” while reaching number 1 on the Cashbox Top 100. John Lennon wrote “Woman” as an ode to his wife Yoko Ono, and to all women. The track begins with Lennon whispering, “For the other half of the sky …” a paraphrase of a Chinese proverb, once used by Mao Zedong.
