On this day, 22 years apart, both Harry Nilsson in 1972 and Mariah Carey in 1994, climb to No.1 with Badfinger’s song “Without You”

Written by Pete Ham and Tom Evans of British rock group Badfinger and first released on their 1970 album “No Dice,” “Without You” has been recorded by over 180 artists but met its most famous versions through Harry Nilsson in 1971 and Mariah Carey in 1994. Nilsson’s version went No.1 on the U.S Hot 100 on February 19, 1972, it became an international hit for Nilsson, so much that eclipsed Badfinger’s original version. 22 years later, on February 19, 1994, Mariah Carey’s version, based on Harry Nilsson’s version rather than the Badfinger original, also goes No. 1, this time in the UK charts, however, like Nilsson’s, her version became a worldwide hit and reached No.1 in several countries. Carey’s version was released as the third single of her album “Music Box” in the first quarter of 1994, and in the United States, it was released on 24 January 1994, oddly, just over a week after Nilsson had died following a heart attack on 15 January 1994. It remains her best selling single in Europe. Both songwriters, Ham and Evans, tragically committed suicide, (Ham in 1975 and Evans in 1983) after an ongoing battle to receive royalties from the song.
