David Geffen celebrates 82
The famous and prominent American business magnate, record executive, film producer, and philanthropist David Geffen, was born on February 21, 1943, in Brooklyn, New York. He began his career in the mailroom of the William Morris Agency, quickly rising to become a talent agent.
Geffen co-founded Asylum Records in 1971, signing influential artists such as the Eagles, Joni Mitchell, and Jackson Browne. In 1980 he established Geffen Records, representing major acts including John Lennon, Elton John, Nirvana and Guns N’ Roses. In 1994 alongside Steven Spielberg and Jeffrey Katzenberg, Geffen co-founded DreamWorks SKG, producing successful films like “American Beauty” and “Shrek.”
Geffen publicly came out as gay in 1992 and has been a significant supporter of LGBTQ+ rights. In 2023, he married Donovan Michaels. He is also known for his extensive art collection and philanthropic contributions, particularly in health, education, and the arts.
Geffen continues to influence the entertainment industry and is actively involved in philanthropic efforts. In 2024, he was involved in a legal dispute over the ownership of the Giacometti sculpture “Le Nez,” highlighting his ongoing engagement in the art world.
