The English singer Tina Charles celebrates 71
The English singer Tina Charles, best known for her contributions to the disco music scene in the 1970s, was born Tina Hoskins on March 10, 1954, in Whitechapel, London. She began her musical journey as a backing vocalist and session singer, recording her first solo single, “Nothing in the World,” in 1969. During this period, she also provided vocals for the “Top of the Pops” album series, covering contemporary hits.
In 1975, Charles gained prominence as the lead vocalist for the group 5000 Volts, delivering the hit single “I’m on Fire,” which achieved significant chart success in the UK and internationally. However, contractual issues prevented her from being publicly recognized as a member of the group at that time.
Charles’s solo career soared in 1976 with the release of “I Love to Love (But My Baby Loves to Dance),” produced by Biddu. The song topped the UK Singles Chart for three weeks and became a global disco anthem. She followed up with several other hits, including “Dance Little Lady Dance,” “Dr. Love,” and “Love Me Like a Lover,” solidifying her status as a disco icon.
As the disco era waned in the late 1970s, Charles’s mainstream popularity declined. She took a hiatus from music to focus on her family but returned in the mid-1980s with remixes of her earlier hits, though without significant commercial success. Since the 2000s, Charles has experienced renewed appreciation for her music, performing across Europe where disco enjoys enduring popularity. In 2008, she released the album “Feels Like Sunday,” featuring re-recordings of her classic tracks alongside new material.
