Tom Jones gets the first of his many No.1 hits on this day in 1965 with “It’s Not Unusual”
Written by Les Reed and Gordon Mills, “It’s Not Unusual” became the first of Tom Jones 1960’s string of hit songs. Released in January 1965, the song reached No.1 on the UK singles charts on March 11, 1965. It was also the first Tom Jones song to chart in the U.S, peaking at No. 10 on the Hot 100 in May 1965. Despite the huge popularity the song achieved through Jones vocals, it was originally to be sung by a female singer, Sandie Shaw that declined it in favor of Jones as she was impressed with his version. Shaw went on to win the 1967 Eurovision song contest with the song “Puppet on A String”. Tom Jones performed the song several times on The Ed Sullivan Show in the US, first on 2 May 1965, then again on 13 June 1965. He sang the song again on the show when he returned on 21 April 1968; he later used this song as the theme for his late 1960’s–early 1970’s television musical variety series “This Is Tom Jones.” It has since become one of his signature songs. Tom Jones also scored big hits with songs such as “Delilah,” “Mama Told Me Not to Come,” “What’s New Pussycat?” and “Green, Green Grass of Home” among many others.
