Steve Harris, born Stephen Percy Harris on March 12, 1956, in Leytonstone, London, England, is a renowned musician best known as the founder, bassist, and primary songwriter of the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. Initially aspiring to a career in professional football with West Ham United, Harris shifted his focus to music during his teenage years.
In 1975, Harris formed Iron Maiden, a band that would become a seminal force in the heavy metal genre. As the only constant member since its inception, he has been instrumental in crafting the band’s distinctive sound, characterized by complex compositions and galloping bass lines. Under his leadership, Iron Maiden has released 17 studio albums, including classics like “The Number of the Beast,” “Powerslave,” and “Senjutsu,” and has sold over 100 million records worldwide.
Beyond his work with Iron Maiden, Harris has pursued solo projects, notably releasing the album “British Lion” in 2012, which showcased a different musical direction while still reflecting his signature style. His dedication to music has earned him recognition as one of the most influential bassists in heavy metal.
In 2024, Harris expressed interest in writing an autobiography to share insights into his life and career, though he cited time constraints due to his ongoing musical commitments. Steve Harris continues to tour and record with Iron Maiden, maintaining a significant presence in the global music scene.
