Bret Michaels was born Bret Michael Sychak, on March 15, 1963, in Butler, Pennsylvania. Raised in Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, he developed a passion for music during his teenage years, drawing inspiration from bands like AC/DC and Aerosmith. In 1983, Michaels co-founded the band Paris with drummer Rikki Rockett, bassist Bobby Dall, and guitarist Matt Smith. The band relocated to Los Angeles in 1984, immersing themselves in the city’s vibrant glam metal scene, and soon after changed their name to Poison.
Poison’s debut album, “Look What the Cat Dragged In,” was released in 1986 and achieved multi-platinum status, propelled by singles like “Talk Dirty to Me.” Their follow-up album, “Open Up and Say… Ahh!” (1988), featured the iconic ballad “Every Rose Has Its Thorn,” which became their first and only number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100. The band’s third album, “Flesh & Blood” (1990), continued their commercial success with hits like “Unskinny Bop” and “Something to Believe In.”
In addition to his work with Poison, Michaels has pursued a solo career, releasing albums such as “A Letter from Death Row” (1998), which served as the soundtrack to the film of the same name that he wrote, directed, and starred in. He also released “Songs of Life” (2003) and “Custom Built” (2010), the latter reaching number one on the Billboard Top Independent Albums chart.
Beyond music, Michaels has appeared in reality television, notably starring in VH1’s “Rock of Love with Bret Michaels” from 2007 to 2009, a dating show that garnered significant attention. He also won NBC’s “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2010, showcasing his business acumen and raising substantial funds for diabetes research, a cause close to him as he has lived with Type 1 diabetes since childhood.
In recent years, Michaels has continued to tour both as a solo artist and with Poison, maintaining a dedicated fan base. He is also nearing completion of his inspirational book, “Bet On Yourself: Don’t Crash & Burn…Crash & Learn,” tentatively set for release in the fall of 2023.
