The son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, Rockwell’s 1984 debut single, “Somebody’s Watching Me,” featuring guest vocals by Michael Jackson remains one of the most memorable 1980s hits

The singer Rockwell celebrates 61

Rockwell, was born Kennedy William Gordy on March 15, 1964, in Detroit, Michigan. As the son of Motown Records founder Berry Gordy and Margaret Norton, he grew up immersed in the music industry. Determined to establish his own identity and avoid accusations of nepotism, he adopted the stage name Rockwell.
In 1983, Rockwell secured a recording contract with Motown Records without his father’s initial knowledge. The following year, he released his debut single, “Somebody’s Watching Me,” featuring guest vocals by Michael Jackson. The track became a major hit, reaching number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and topping charts internationally. His debut album, also titled “Somebody’s Watching Me,” included additional singles like “Obscene Phone Caller,” which achieved moderate success.
Rockwell’s subsequent albums, “Captured” (1985) and “The Genie” (1986), did not replicate the success of his debut, leading him to step back from the music industry in the early 1990s. Despite his brief time in the spotlight, “Somebody’s Watching Me” has endured as a pop culture staple, featuring in films, commercials, and experiencing periodic resurgences in popularity.
In recent years, Rockwell has maintained a low profile, occasionally reappearing in the public eye.
