The American comedian, actor, singer, filmmaker, and humanitarian Jerry Lewis was born Joseph Levitch on March 16, 1926, in Newark, New Jersey.
Lewis began performing at a young age, developing a comedy act in which he mimed to records. He dropped out of high school to pursue entertainment, performing in theaters, burlesque shows, and nightclubs. In 1946, he partnered with singer Dean Martin to form the comedy duo Martin and Lewis. Their act, combining Martin’s singing with Lewis’s comedic antics, gained national acclaim through performances in nightclubs, on radio, and television appearances on “The Colgate Comedy Hour.” They starred in 16 films together, including “My Friend Irma” (1949) and “The Stooge” (1951), becoming the most popular comedy team of the decade.
After the duo split in 1956, Lewis embarked on a successful solo career. He starred in and directed numerous films, showcasing his slapstick humor and innovative filmmaking techniques. Notable works include “The Bellboy” (1960) and “The Nutty Professor” (1963). Lewis also hosted “The Jerry Lewis Show” on television and recorded albums as a singer. Beyond entertainment, he was a dedicated humanitarian, hosting annual telethons for the Muscular Dystrophy Association from 1966 to 2010, raising significant funds and awareness for the cause.
Jerry Lewis passed away on August 20, 2017, in Las Vegas, Nevada, at the age of 91. His legacy endures through his contributions to comedy, film, and charitable endeavors.
