The Level 42 co-vocalist and keyboardist Mike Lindup celebrates 66
Best known as the keyboardist and co-vocalist for the British band Level 42, Michael David Lindup, was born on March 17, 1959, in London, England. Born to musical parents—his father, David Lindup, was a composer and orchestrator, and his mother, Nadia Cattouse, an actress and singer—Mike was immersed in a rich musical environment from an early age.
He began composing at the age of three and started piano lessons at six. His formal education included studies at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester, where he focused on piano, percussion, and composition, and participated in senior and chamber choirs. He later attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, expanding his repertoire to include orchestral percussion and jazz ensemble performances.
In 1980, Lindup co-founded Level 42 alongside Mark King and brothers Phil and Boon Gould. The band gained international acclaim for their jazz-funk and pop-rock fusion, producing hits like “Lessons in Love,” “Something About You,” and “Running in the Family.” Lindup’s distinctive falsetto vocals and innovative keyboard work were integral to the band’s signature sound.
Pursuing solo endeavors, Lindup released his debut album, “Changes,” in 1990, featuring collaborations with artists such as Dominic Miller, Pino Palladino, and Manu Katché. After a hiatus from Level 42 in the mid-1990s, during which he explored various musical styles and collaborated with groups like Da Lata, he rejoined the band in 2006. In 2023, he released “Changes 2,” a follow-up to his debut solo album, showcasing his continued evolution as an artist.
Throughout his career, Lindup has demonstrated versatility across genres, contributing significantly to the music industry both as a member of Level 42 and as a solo artist.
