Gary Leonard Oldman was born on March 21, 1958, in New Cross, London, England. Raised in a working-class family, he developed an early interest in music and acting. After leaving school at 16, Oldman worked various jobs before pursuing acting studies at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama in Sidcup, Kent, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Acting in 1979.
Oldman’s professional acting career began in the theater, where he performed with companies such as the Citizens Theatre in Glasgow and later with London’s Royal Court and Royal Shakespeare Company. His stage work earned him recognition and paved the way for his transition to film.
He gained prominence with his portrayal of punk rocker Sid Vicious in “Sid and Nancy” (1986) and playwright Joe Orton in “Prick Up Your Ears” (1987). These performances showcased his versatility and intensity as an actor. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Oldman took on a variety of roles, including Lee Harvey Oswald in “JFK” (1991), Count Dracula in “Bram Stoker’s Dracula” (1992), and the villainous Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg in “The Fifth Element” (1997).
In the 2000s, Oldman became widely recognized for his portrayal of Sirius Black in the “Harry Potter” film series and as Commissioner James Gordon in Christopher Nolan’s “The Dark Knight” trilogy. His performance as Winston Churchill in “Darkest Hour” (2017) earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor.
Beyond film, Oldman has returned to theater, starring in a production of Samuel Beckett’s “Krapp’s Last Tape” at York Theatre Royal in 2025. He has also been open about his personal struggles with alcoholism, maintaining sobriety for over 27 years.
