The British actor Timothy Dalton celebrates 79

Timothy Leonard Dalton Leggett was born on March 21, 1946, in Colwyn Bay, Wales. His father, Peter Dalton Leggett, was an Englishman serving as a captain in the Special Operations Executive during World War II, and his mother, Dorothy Scholes, was an American of Italian and Irish descent. Dalton was the eldest of five children. At the age of 16, after witnessing a performance of “Macbeth,” he decided to pursue acting. He joined the National Youth Theatre and later attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, although he left before completing his studies to join the Birmingham Repertory Theatre.
Dalton’s film debut came in 1968 with his portrayal of Philip II of France in “The Lion in Winter.” He continued to build his career with roles in period dramas such as “Wuthering Heights” (1970), where he played Heathcliff, and “Mary, Queen of Scots” (1971), portraying Henry, Lord Darnley. In the 1980s, he appeared as Prince Barin in the cult classic “Flash Gordon” (1980) and took on the role of Mr. Rochester in the BBC miniseries adaptation of “Jane Eyre” (1983).
Dalton gained international prominence as the fourth actor to portray James Bond in the Eon Productions film series. He starred in “The Living Daylights” (1987) and “Licence to Kill” (1989), bringing a darker and more serious tone to the iconic character, which was a departure from his predecessors’ interpretations.
Beyond his work as Bond, Dalton’s diverse career includes roles in films such as “The Rocketeer” (1991), “Hot Fuzz” (2007), and as the voice of Mr. Pricklepants in “Toy Story 3” (2010). On television, he portrayed Rassilon in the “Doctor Who” specials (2009–2010), Sir Malcolm Murray in the horror drama series “Penny Dreadful” (2014–2016), and Niles Caulder/The Chief in the superhero series “Doom Patrol” (2019–2021).
