Mariah Carey celebrates 56

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1969, in Huntington, New York. Her mother, Patricia Hickey, was a vocal coach and former opera singer, and her father, Alfred Roy Carey, was an aeronautical engineer. Carey demonstrated musical talent early on, beginning singing lessons at age four and showcasing a remarkable vocal range spanning five octaves. After graduating from Harborfields High School in 1987, she moved to Manhattan to pursue a music career, working various jobs while writing songs and actively seeking opportunities in the industry.
Carey’s breakthrough came in 1988 when she attended a CBS Records party with singer Brenda K. Starr, for whom she had started singing backup. Starr encouraged Carey to bring along a demo tape, which eventually reached Tommy Mottola, the president of Columbia Records. Impressed by her talent, Mottola signed Carey, leading to the release of her self-titled debut album in 1990. The album showcased her incredible vocal range and blended several musical genres, including gospel, pop, and rhythm and blues (R&B). It was a huge success, and in 1991 Carey won Grammy Awards for Best New Artist and Best Female Pop Vocalist.
Throughout the 1990s, Carey solidified her status as a leading artist with albums like “Emotions” (1991), “Music Box” (1993), and “Daydream” (1995). Her 1994 holiday album, “Merry Christmas,” featured the original song “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has become a perennial holiday classic and one of the best-selling singles globally.
In 1997, Carey released “Butterfly,” marking a shift towards hip-hop and R&B influences and reflecting her personal and artistic growth. The early 2000s presented challenges, but she made a triumphant return with “The Emancipation of Mimi” in 2005, featuring hits like “We Belong Together,” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 14 weeks.
Over her career, Carey has achieved 19 number-one singles on the Billboard Hot 100, making her one of the best-selling female artists of all time with over 200 million albums sold worldwide. Beyond music, she has ventured into acting, with roles in films like “Precious” (2009), and authored her memoir, “The Meaning of Mariah Carey,” in 2020.
