The singer and songwriter Perry Farrell celebrates 66
Best known as the frontman of the alternative rock band Jane’s Addiction and Porno for Pyros, Perry Farrell, was born Peretz Bernstein on March 29, 1959, in Queens, New York. After graduating from high school, Farrell moved to California, where he immersed himself in the music scene and eventually formed Jane’s Addiction in the mid-1980s. The band quickly became a key act in the Los Angeles music scene, blending punk, metal, and psychedelic rock to create a unique sound. Their daring live performances and experimental approach resonated with disillusioned youth, contributing to the rise of alternative music as a form of rebellion and self-expression.
In 1991, Farrell founded Lollapalooza as a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction. The festival has since evolved into an annual event that showcases diverse musical genres and has expanded internationally to countries including Chile, Argentina, Brazil, Germany, France, Sweden, and India.
Following Jane’s Addiction’s initial breakup, Farrell formed Porno for Pyros in 1992, releasing two albums that continued to explore alternative and psychedelic rock sounds. Throughout his career, he has also engaged in solo projects and collaborations, including the formation of Satellite Party and the Kind Heaven Orchestra, further showcasing his versatility as an artist.
Farrell is married to Etty Lau Farrell, whom he met during a Jane’s Addiction tour where she performed as a backing dancer. The couple has two children together. Beyond his musical endeavors, Farrell is recognized for his contributions to the alternative music scene and his role in creating platforms that celebrate diverse musical talents.
