The legendary Herb Alpert celebrates 90

Herb Alpert was born on March 31, 1935, in Los Angeles, California. Raised in a musical family, he began playing the trumpet at the age of eight. After high school, Alpert attended the University of Southern California, where he was a member of the USC Trojan Marching Band. His early career involved working as a songwriter and session musician, co-writing hits like “Wonderful World” with Sam Cooke.
In 1962, Alpert co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss, which became one of the most successful independent record labels. That same year, he formed Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, achieving widespread acclaim with their unique blend of jazz, Latin, and pop influences. The band’s hits include “The Lonely Bull,” “A Taste of Honey,” and “Tijuana Taxi.”
Alpert’s 1968 vocal performance of “This Guy’s in Love with You” reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1979, his instrumental track “Rise” also topped the charts, making him the only artist to achieve number one hits as both a vocalist and instrumentalist. Throughout his career, Alpert has released numerous albums, earning multiple Grammy Awards and selling over 72 million records worldwide.
Beyond music, Alpert is a visual artist and philanthropist. The Herb Alpert Foundation supports arts education and other charitable causes. In recognition of his contributions, he received the National Medal of Arts in 2012.
