Stefan Alexander Bo Olsdal was born on March 31, 1974, in Gothenburg, Sweden. During his childhood, his family relocated to Luxembourg, where he attended the American International School of Luxembourg. It was there that he first crossed paths with Brian Molko, although the two did not become friends at that time. Olsdal’s musical journey began in 1987 when he played drums in his school’s orchestra. Seeking a more prominent role in performances, he transitioned to bass guitar and piano. After completing his high school education in Sweden, he moved to London in 1993 to attend the Musicians Institute.
In 1994, a chance encounter with Brian Molko at a London tube station led to the formation of the band Placebo. Olsdal, as the bassist and guitarist, has been instrumental in Placebo’s success, contributing to albums such as “Without You I’m Nothing” (1998), “Black Market Music” (2000), and “Sleeping with Ghosts” (2003).
Beyond Placebo, Olsdal has explored various musical projects. Their albums “Inside” (2017) and “Complex” (2021) feature collaborations with various artists.
Olsdal is openly gay and has been in a long-term relationship with David Amen since 1994. The couple has a son. In 2018, Olsdal applied for British citizenship, reflecting his deep connection to the UK.
