Ewan Gordon McGregor was born on March 31, 1971, in Perth, Scotland, and raised in the nearby town of Crieff. His parents, Carol Diane (née Lawson) and James Charles McGregor, were both educators. At the age of 16, McGregor left school to join the Perth Repertory Theatre, with his parents’ support, to pursue his passion for acting. He later studied drama at Kirkcaldy in Fife before enrolling at London’s Guildhall School of Music and Drama.
McGregor’s professional acting career began with a leading role in the British television series “Lipstick on Your Collar” (1993). He gained international recognition for his portrayal of Mark Renton, a heroin addict, in Danny Boyle’s film “Trainspotting” (1996). This role showcased his versatility and established him as a prominent figure in the film industry.
In 1999, McGregor took on the iconic role of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy, further elevating his status in Hollywood. His performance as the wise Jedi Knight resonated with audiences and became one of his most memorable roles. He reprised this character in the Disney+ miniseries “Obi-Wan Kenobi” (2022).
Throughout his career, McGregor has demonstrated remarkable range, starring in musicals like “Moulin Rouge!” (2001), dramas such as “Big Fish” (2003), and thrillers like “The Ghost Writer” (2010). His portrayal of brothers Ray and Emmit Stussy in the third season of the television series “Fargo” (2017) earned him a Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film.
Beyond acting, McGregor is known for his adventurous spirit, undertaking motorcycle journeys documented in the series “Long Way Round” (2004) and “Long Way Down” (2007), which highlighted his travels across continents. He is also recognized for his philanthropic efforts, serving as a UNICEF UK ambassador since 2004.
