Gregory Joel Abbott was born on April 2, 1954, in New York City, New York. Raised in Harlem by parents of Venezuelan and Antiguan descent, he was introduced to music early on by his mother, who taught him piano and encouraged his vocal development. Abbott pursued higher education in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and creative writing at Stanford University, where he was awarded a Wallace Stegner Fellowship. He later taught English at Berkeley before fully dedicating himself to a music career.
