Gregory Joel Abbott was born on April 2, 1954, in New York City, New York. Raised in Harlem by parents of Venezuelan and Antiguan descent, he was introduced to music early on by his mother, who taught him piano and encouraged his vocal development. Abbott pursued higher education in psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, and creative writing at Stanford University, where he was awarded a Wallace Stegner Fellowship. He later taught English at Berkeley before fully dedicating himself to a music career.
In 1986, Abbott released his debut album, “Shake You Down,” featuring the title track that became a platinum-selling hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. The album’s success established him as a prominent figure in the R&B and soul genres. His follow-up album, “I’ll Prove It to You” (1988), continued to showcase his smooth vocal style and songwriting skills. Throughout his career, Abbott has released several albums, including “One World!” (1996) and “Drop Your Mask” (2011), blending elements of R&B, soul, and Caribbean influences. Beyond performing, he has contributed to the music industry as a producer and songwriter for various artists.
