Peter Grant was born on April 5, 1935, in South Norwood, London, England. He began his career in the entertainment industry as a stagehand and later worked as a bouncer, wrestler, and bit-part actor. In the early 1960s, Grant transitioned into music management, initially serving as a tour manager for artists such as Chuck Berry, Gene Vincent, and the Animals. He then took on managerial roles for bands including the Nashville Teens and the Yardbirds.
In 1968, Grant became the manager of Led Zeppelin, guiding the band from its inception until its disbandment in 1980. His hands-on approach and formidable negotiating skills secured unprecedented deals for the band, significantly improving financial and contractual terms for musicians in their dealings with concert promoters and record labels. Grant was instrumental in establishing Swan Song Records in 1974, providing Led Zeppelin and other artists greater artistic control over their work.
Following the dissolution of Led Zeppelin, Grant withdrew from the music industry, focusing on personal matters and overcoming health challenges. He made occasional public appearances in the early 1990s, including a cameo in the film “Carry On Columbus” (1992). Peter Grant passed away from a heart attack on November 21, 1995, in Eastbourne, England, at the age of 60. His legacy as a pioneering music manager endures, having reshaped the dynamics between artists and the music business.
