Julian Lennon celebrates 62 today
The son of John Lennon of The Beatles and his first wife, Cynthia Powell, Julian Lennon was born John Charles Julian Lennon on April 8, 1963, in Liverpool, England. Named after John Lennon’s late mother, Julia, Julian was thrust into the public eye from birth due to his father’s global fame. His early years were marked by both the pressures and privileges of being part of music royalty.
Julian’s interest in music began at a young age. As a child, he inspired the Beatles’ songs “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds” and “Hey Jude,” the latter written by Paul McCartney to comfort him during his parents’ divorce. He released his debut album, Valotte, in 1984, which earned critical praise and commercial success. The title track and “Too Late for Goodbyes” were international hits, showcasing his melodic pop sensibilities and vocal resemblance to his father.
Over the years, Julian released several more albums, including The Secret Value of Daydreaming (1986), Mr. Jordan (1989), and Photograph Smile (1998), demonstrating both his artistic growth and his desire to carve out an identity distinct from his father’s. In addition to his music career, Julian has also pursued photography and philanthropy. He founded The White Feather Foundation, focusing on environmental and humanitarian causes.
