​Dennis William Quaid was born on April 9, 1954, in Houston, Texas. He grew up in the suburb of Bellaire, where he developed an early interest in the arts. Quaid studied drama, Mandarin Chinese, and dance at Bellaire High School and later attended the University of Houston. However, he left college before graduating to pursue an acting career in Los Angeles.​
Quaid’s early years in Hollywood were challenging, but he gained recognition with his role in Breaking Away (1979). His portrayal of astronaut Gordon Cooper in The Right Stuff (1983) further established his reputation. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Quaid starred in a variety of films, including The Big Easy (1986), Innerspace (1987), and Great Balls of Fire! (1989), where he played musician Jerry Lee Lewis. In addition to his film career, Quaid has appeared in television productions, notably portraying President Bill Clinton in The Special Relationship (2010), earning nominations for an Emmy, a Golden Globe, and a Screen Actors Guild Award. He also played President Ronald Reagan in the biopic Reagan (2024).​
Beyond acting, Quaid is a musician and fronts the band Dennis Quaid & The Sharks. He has also been open about his personal struggles, including overcoming addiction.
