David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He grew up in the Broad Ripple area of the city, where his father worked as a florist and his mother as a church secretary. Letterman attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, graduating in 1969 with a degree in telecommunications. During his college years, he began his broadcasting career at the campus radio station, WBST.
After college, Letterman worked as a weatherman and television announcer in Indianapolis before moving to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue a career in comedy. He performed stand-up at The Comedy Store and wrote material for various television shows. His appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” led to his own daytime program, “The David Letterman Show,” in 1980. Though short-lived, it earned critical acclaim and paved the way for his late-night career.
