David Letterman celebrates 78 today

​David Michael Letterman was born on April 12, 1947, in Indianapolis, Indiana. He grew up in the Broad Ripple area of the city, where his father worked as a florist and his mother as a church secretary. Letterman attended Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana, graduating in 1969 with a degree in telecommunications. During his college years, he began his broadcasting career at the campus radio station, WBST.​
After college, Letterman worked as a weatherman and television announcer in Indianapolis before moving to Los Angeles in 1975 to pursue a career in comedy. He performed stand-up at The Comedy Store and wrote material for various television shows. His appearances on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson” led to his own daytime program, “The David Letterman Show,” in 1980. Though short-lived, it earned critical acclaim and paved the way for his late-night career.​
In 1982, Letterman launched “Late Night with David Letterman” on NBC, introducing audiences to his unique brand of humor and segments like “Stupid Pet Tricks” and the “Top Ten List.” After a network transition in 1993, he began hosting “The Late Show with David Letterman” on CBS, where he remained until his retirement in 2015. Over his 33-year tenure in late-night television, Letterman became known for his innovative approach and influence on future generations of comedians.​
Beyond television, Letterman founded the production company Worldwide Pants Incorporated, which produced several successful shows. He also co-owns an auto racing team, Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. Since 2018, he has hosted the Netflix series “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction with David Letterman,” featuring in-depth interviews with notable figures.​
As of April 12, 2025, David Letterman celebrates his 78th birthday, marking a legacy as one of the most influential figures in American television history.​
