Andy Garcia was born ​Andrés Arturo García Menéndez on April 12, 1956, in Havana, Cuba. His mother, Amelie Menéndez, was an English teacher, and his father, René García Núñez, was an attorney and avocado farmer. In 1961, when Garcia was five years old, his family fled Cuba following the rise of Fidel Castro’s regime and settled in Miami, Florida.​
During his high school years at Miami Beach Senior High School, Garcia was an avid basketball player. However, a bout of mononucleosis during his senior year shifted his focus from sports to acting. He pursued drama studies at Florida International University and began performing in regional theater productions. In the late 1970s, Garcia moved to Los Angeles to further his acting career, taking on various jobs while auditioning for roles.​

In 2005, he directed and starred in “The Lost City,” a film set in Havana during the Cuban Revolution, reflecting his personal connection to his homeland.​
In addition to acting, Garcia has produced several films and won both a Grammy and a Latin Grammy Award in 2005 for producing the album “¡Ahora Sí!” by Cuban musician Israel “Cachao” López. He continues to work in film and television, with recent roles in projects like “Father of the Bride” (2022).​
