Paul Anthony Sorvino was born on April 13, 1939, in Brooklyn, New York. Raised in the Bensonhurst neighborhood, he developed an early interest in the arts, studying at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy in New York City. Initially working as an advertising copywriter, Sorvino transitioned to acting, making his Broadway debut in the 1964 musical Bajour.
Sorvino’s film career began in 1970 with Carl Reiner’s Where’s Poppa?. He gained recognition for his role in The Panic in Needle Park (1971) and earned a Tony Award nomination for his performance in the 1972 play That Championship Season, a role he reprised in the 1982 film adaptation. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Sorvino appeared in various films, including A Touch of Class (1973), Reds (1981), and The Rocketeer (1991).

Beyond acting, Sorvino was a talented opera singer, sculptor, and writer. He founded the Paul Sorvino Asthma Foundation, inspired by his own struggles with the condition. He also directed and starred in various projects, including a 1999 television adaptation of That Championship Season.
Sorvino was father to three children from his first marriage, among them Academy Award-winning actress Mira Sorvino. He married political pundit Dee Dee Benkie in 2014.
Paul Sorvino passed away from natural causes on July 25, 2022, at the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida, at the age of 83.
