The Scottish actor Robert Carlyle celebrates 64 today

His breakthrough came with the roles of Francis Begbie in the 1996 movie Trainspotting and Gaz in The Full Monty, the latter earning him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor.​ On television, he starred in Stargate Universe and portrayed Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold in Once Upon a Time

​Robert Carlyle was born on April 14, 1961, in Maryhill, Glasgow, Scotland. Raised by his father after his mother left when he was four, Carlyle left school at 16 and worked as a painter and decorator. Inspired by Arthur Miller’s play The Crucible, he developed an interest in acting, attending night classes at Cardonald College and later studying at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama.​
In 1991, Carlyle co-founded the Raindog Theatre Company and made his film debut in Ken Loach’s Riff-Raff. He gained recognition for his role as a serial killer in the TV series Cracker and as the title character in Hamish Macbeth. His breakthrough came with the roles of Francis Begbie in Trainspotting (1996) and Gaz in The Full Monty (1997), the latter earning him a BAFTA Award for Best Actor.​
Carlyle’s diverse filmography includes The World Is Not Enough (1999), Angela’s Ashes (1999), The Beach (2000), 28 Weeks Later (2007), and The Legend of Barney Thomson (2015), which he also directed. On television, he starred in Stargate Universe (2009–2011) and portrayed Rumplestiltskin/Mr. Gold in Once Upon a Time (2011–2018). He has also voiced characters in video games, notably Gabriel Belmont/Dracula in the Castlevania: Lords of Shadow series.​
Known for his commitment to authenticity, Carlyle often immerses himself deeply into his roles. He was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1999.
