Jack Nicholson celebrates 88 today
Jack Nicholson was born on April 22, 1937, in Neptune City, New Jersey. Raised by his grandmother as the child of single mother June Frances Nicholson, he grew up in nearby Manasquan, where his early fascination with movies and performance led him to drop out of high school and head west in search of opportunity.
After a string of small, often uncredited parts in the early 1960s, Nicholson’s big break came in 1969 with his memorable turn as a laid‑back biker in “Easy Rider.” He followed that with a stunning lead in “Five Easy Pieces” (1970), earning his first Oscar nomination. Throughout the 1970s he solidified his reputation as Hollywood’s most magnetic anti‑hero—most notably winning Best Actor for his portrayal of Randle McMurphy in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” (1975).
In the 1980s and ’90s Nicholson demonstrated his range, from Jack Torrance’s descent into madness in “The Shining” (1980) to the charming rogue of “Terms of Endearment” (1983) and the sardonic Joker in Tim Burton’s “Batman” (1989). He won his second Academy Award for Best Actor in “As Good as It Gets” (1997), playing an irascible novelist whose heart is softened by love.
Known for his unmistakable grin, piercing eyes and a fearless commitment to every role, Nicholson continued to captivate audiences into the 2000s with films like “About Schmidt” (2002) and “The Departed” (2006). With more Oscar nominations than any other male actor, he remains one of America’s most celebrated screen legends.
