Remembering Julian McMahon

Born on July 27, 1968, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, McMahon was the son of former Australian Prime Minister Sir William McMahon and socialite Lady Sonia McMahon. He briefly studied law and economics before transitioning to modeling in his late teens, working in fashion capitals such as Paris, Milan, and New York.

McMahon began his acting career on Australian television with roles in The Power, The Passion and the popular soap Home and Away. After moving to the United States, he landed his first major American role in Another World, but it was his part as Detective John Grant in Profiler that launched his international career.

He gained widespread recognition playing the conflicted demon Cole Turner in Charmed (2000–2005), and later, as the brash plastic surgeon Dr. Christian Troy in Nip/Tuck (2003–2010), a role that earned him critical acclaim and a Golden Globe nomination.

In film, McMahon portrayed the villainous Victor Von Doom in Marvel’s Fantastic Four (2005) and its 2007 sequel. His filmography also included Premonition, Red, and more recently The Surfer (2024), in which he played a reflective, mature role that many considered a career high point.

McMahon continued to work steadily in television, starring as FBI agent Jess LaCroix in FBI: Most Wanted from 2020 to 2022, and had recently completed work on the Netflix political drama The Residence shortly before his passing.

Off-screen, McMahon was known for his quiet charm and professionalism. He was married three times, including to pop star Dannii Minogue and actress Brooke Burns, with whom he had a daughter. He married writer and model Kelly Paniagua in 2014, remaining with her until his death.

Julian McMahon’s legacy is one of range and resilience—he played demons and doctors, villains and heroes—with an elegance that made him a favorite among audiences around the world. His colleagues remembered him as “magnetic, warm, and deeply kind,” a sentiment echoed by fans and co-stars alike.
