Giorgio Armani 1934-2025
Giorgio Armani, born on July 11, 1934, in the northern Italian city of Piacenza, grew up during a period of wartime hardship that shaped his appreciation for simplicity and restraint. Initially intending to become a doctor, he left medical school to work as a window dresser and fashion buyer for Milan’s La Rinascente department store. This early immersion in fabrics and color theory laid the foundation for a career that would redefine modern elegance. By the mid-1960s, Armani was designing menswear for Nino Cerruti, where he perfected the art of soft tailoring. In 1975, alongside his partner Sergio Galeotti, he launched Giorgio Armani S.p.A. Their debut collection introduced unstructured jackets and neutral tones that broke with the rigid tailoring of the era. Armani’s understated yet impeccably cut suits quickly became synonymous with “power dressing,” influencing both corporate wardrobes and Hollywood style. His designs gained global fame when they appeared in films such as American Gigolo and on red carpets worldwide. Over the decades, Armani expanded his brand into womenswear, fragrances, home interiors, and even hotels, while maintaining a minimalist aesthetic that remained unmistakably his own. Known for steering his company without the backing of large luxury conglomerates, he became an emblem of creative independence in fashion. Armani was reportedly in declining health in the months leading up to his death and was notably absent from Milan Fashion Week in June 2025, marking the first time he did not attend his own runway shows. He died from liver failure at his home in Milan, on 4 September 2025, aged 91. RIP.
