Remembering Keith Flint
Keith Flint was born in Redbridge, London, on 17 September 1969. He rose to worldwide fame as a member of The Prodigy during the 1990s. After a difficult childhood, Flint dropped out of school at 15 and worked as a roofer. In the late 1980s he embraced the emerging rave and acid-house scene in the UK and met DJ Liam Howlett. Impressed by Liam’s music mixes, Flint suggested he could dance onstage during his sets. When Liam agreed, Flint brought along his friend Leeroy Thornhill to join the dancing act. The trio decided to form a band, and Flint recruited MC Maxim (who joined as the group’s MC and vocalist).
The Prodigy quickly gained popularity in London’s underground rave and dance scene. With Liam as the mastermind and main songwriter, they began producing original material. During the early 1990s they released several EPs, followed by their debut full-length album, Experience, in 1992. That album included their first major hit, “Out of Space.”
The breakthrough came in 1994 with their second album, Music for the Jilted Generation. It defined The Prodigy’s future sound: a unique fusion of techno, dance, electronica, punk, metal, and alternative rock. The record featured early classics such as “Poison,” “Voodoo People,” and “No Good (Start the Dance).”
With his incendiary attitude, eccentric looks, and charisma, Flint quickly became the band’s most popular and recognizable member. In 1996 he sang lead vocals on the breakthrough singles “Firestarter” and “Breathe,” which catapulted The Prodigy to global fame and established him as one of the band’s lead vocalists alongside MC Maxim. The following year, The Prodigy released The Fat of the Land (1997), on which Flint sang lead on several tracks, including “Firestarter” and “Breathe.”
The album exploded worldwide, turning The Prodigy into one of the biggest bands on the planet. They conquered not only the techno and dance scenes of the late 1990s but also the alternative-rock world. The band became the first major techno act to attract a huge following from rock, punk, and metal fans, thanks in large part to their heavy sound and Flint’s punk fashion and attitude. The album also included the controversial 1997 track “Smack My Bitch Up,” which remains heavily censored to this day.
Over the following years The Prodigy continued releasing new music. Flint also launched his own side project, a punk band called Flint, which released two singles (“Asteroids” and “Aim 4”) in 2003, though a full album was never completed. He remained active with The Prodigy, helping introduce the band to new generations of fans. Keith Flint’s final album with the group, No Tourists, was released in 2018.
On the morning of 4 March 2019, following welfare concerns, police were called to Flint’s home in North End, near Great Dunmow, Essex, where he was found dead at the age of 49. Bandmate Liam Howlett stated on Instagram that Flint had taken his own life. Flint had a history of chronic depression and addiction struggles, which may have contributed to his tragic death.
Today Keith Flint remains one of the most iconic figures in music and pop culture — a true pioneer whose fiery performances and punk spirit helped redefine electronic music for a generation.
