The singer-songwriter Norah Jones celebrates 47
Norah Jones was born Geetali Norah Jones Shankar on March 30, 1979, in Brooklyn, New York. The daughter of sitar maestro Ravi Shankar and concert producer Sue Jones, she spent her early years in Texas, where she absorbed jazz, country and folk influences that would later shape her sound.
After studying jazz piano at the University of North Texas, Jones moved to New York City in 2000 and quickly made a name for herself on the club circuit. In 2002 she released her debut album, “Come Away with Me,” whose intimate blend of jazz, pop and soul struck a chord worldwide—earning five Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year, and selling over 27 million copies.
Over the next two decades, Jones has explored a wide musical palette: her follow-ups “Feels Like Home” (2004) and “Not Too Late” (2007) deepened her introspective songwriting, while later projects like “Little Broken Hearts” (2012) and “Day Breaks” (2016) found her collaborating with producers from rock, electronica and R&B. She’s also ventured into film soundtracks and formed the alt-country supergroup Puss n Boots with fellow singer-songwriters Sasha Dobson and Catherine Popper.
Known for her warm, smoky voice and unassuming stage presence, Norah Jones continues to tour and record, bridging genres with effortless grace and reminding listeners that sincerity and subtlety can resonate more deeply than the loudest chords.
