The Pearl Jam guitarist and co-founder Mike McCready celebrates 60 today
Michael David McCready was born on April 5, 1966, in Pensacola, Florida. Shortly after his birth, his family relocated to Seattle, Washington, where he was raised. Inspired by the music of Jimi Hendrix and Kiss, McCready began playing guitar at the age of eleven. During his high school years at Roosevelt High School, he formed his first band, Shadow, which primarily performed covers before transitioning to original material. In the mid-1980s, Shadow moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of a record deal but returned to Seattle after limited success.
In 1990, McCready co-founded the rock band Pearl Jam alongside Stone Gossard, Jeff Ament, and Eddie Vedder. The band’s debut album, “Ten” (1991), achieved significant commercial success, featuring hits like “Alive” and “Jeremy.” McCready’s distinctive guitar work became a hallmark of Pearl Jam’s sound, contributing to their status as pioneers of the grunge movement.
Beyond Pearl Jam, McCready has participated in various side projects, including Temple of the Dog, Mad Season, and The Rockfords. He has also collaborated with artists such as Neil Young and contributed to several film soundtracks. In 2017, McCready was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Pearl Jam. Throughout his career, he has been open about his battle with Crohn’s disease, advocating for awareness and research related to the condition.
