The singer-songwriter Alan Clarke celebrates 84 today

Harold Allan Clarke was born on April 5, 1942, in Salford, Lancashire, England. Clarke formed The Hollies in 1962 alongside his childhood friend Graham Nash, achieving international success with hits like “Bus Stop,” “On a Carousel,” and “Carrie Anne.” Beyond his role as lead vocalist, Clarke co-wrote several of the band’s notable songs, including “Jennifer Eccles” and “Long Cool Woman in a Black Dress.”
In 1971, Clarke briefly departed from The Hollies to pursue a solo career, releasing albums such as “My Real Name Is ‘Arold” (1972) and “Headroom” (1973). He returned to the band in 1973, continuing to perform and record with them until his retirement in 1999, which was prompted by issues with his vocal cords and a desire to support his wife, Jennifer, during her battle with cancer.
After a two-decade hiatus, Clarke made a comeback in 2019 with the solo album “Resurgence,” showcasing his enduring talent and passion for music. He followed up with “I’ll Never Forget” in 2023, featuring collaborations with Graham Nash. As of April 5, 2025, Allan Clarke celebrates his 83rd birthday, marking over six decades of influence in the music industry.
