The actor Tim Curry celebrates 80 today

Tim Curry was born on April 19, 1946, in Grappenhall, Cheshire, England. Raised in a music‑loving household—his father was a teacher and his mother a textile designer—he discovered a passion for performance early on. After studying English and drama at the University of Birmingham, where he honed his skills in university productions, Curry moved into professional theatre in the late 1960s, appearing in London’s West End in shows like “Hair” and “The Secretary Bird.”
His international breakthrough came in 1973 when he originated the role of Dr. Frank N. Furter in the stage musical “The Rocky Horror Show”; two years later he reprised the part in Jim Sharman’s film adaptation “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” becoming a cult icon. Throughout the late 1970s and 1980s, Curry showcased his versatility in a string of memorable roles: the eerie clown Pennywise in Stephen King’s “It” (1990), the fast‑talking butler Wadsworth in the whodunit comedy “Clue” (1985), and the Lord of Darkness in Ridley Scott’s fantasy “Legend” (1985).
Alongside his film work, he built a distinguished voice‑acting career, most famously voicing the explosion‑obsessed Nigel Thornberry on Nickelodeon’s “The Wild Thornberrys.” On stage he earned a Tony nomination for “My Favorite Year” and delighted audiences in the Broadway musical “Spamalot.” Over five decades, Curry’s magnetic charisma, effortless shifts between comedy and menace, and rich baritone have made him one of his generation’s most enduring and beloved performers.
