David Hockney 1937-2026

David Hockney, the brilliant and endlessly inventive British painter whose colorful visions of California pools, intimate portraits, and bold experiments across media made him one of the most important and beloved artists of his time, died peacefully at his home in London on June 11, 2026. He was 88, one month short of his 89th birthday.

David Hockney 1937-2026

Born David Hockney on July 9, 1937, in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England, he studied at Bradford School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, where he quickly emerged as a leading voice in the British Pop art scene of the early 1960s.
Hockney first gained widespread attention in the 1960s with his distinctive figurative style at a time when abstraction dominated. His move to Los Angeles in 1964 proved pivotal. Drawn to the intense California light and relaxed lifestyle, he created his celebrated swimming pool series. Paintings such as A Bigger Splash (1967) and the later masterpiece Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) (1972) became iconic — vibrant, graphic, and full of quiet drama. He also produced sensitive, naturalistic portraits of friends and lovers, openly exploring gay life and desire in his work long before it was widely accepted.
Never content to repeat himself, Hockney expanded his practice in the 1980s with inventive “joiner” photo collages — dynamic, multi-image compositions that echoed Cubism. He also became a highly regarded stage designer, creating colorful, theatrical sets for major opera productions at Glyndebourne, the Metropolitan Opera, and elsewhere.
Late Career: Digital Pioneer and Continued Relevance
In his later years, Hockney remained remarkably prolific and forward-looking. Embracing technology with childlike enthusiasm, he began creating thousands of vivid drawings and landscapes on his iPhone and iPad from 2009 onward. Series such as The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate demonstrated his ability to blend traditional observation with digital tools in fresh, immediate ways. He continued painting ambitious large-scale landscapes en plein air in his native Yorkshire and produced major multi-canvas works. Landmark retrospectives — including A Bigger Picture at the Royal Academy (2012) and a hugely popular show at Tate Britain (2017) — drew record audiences and reaffirmed his status as a giant of contemporary art. Even late in life, his work commanded extraordinary prices at auction, with Portrait of an Artist (Pool with Two Figures) selling for $90 million in 2018.
Hockney died peacefully at his home in London on June 11, 2026. He was 88, one month short of his 89th birthday. His publicist confirmed the death.
Over more than six decades, David Hockney championed the pleasures of looking, drawing, and painting while constantly reinventing his approach. He received many honors, including the Order of Merit, and leaves behind an extraordinary body of work that continues to delight and inspire.
Hockney is survived by his longtime companion, Jean-Pierre Gonçalves de Lima. A private funeral was held according to his wishes. RIP.
