Bonnie Tyler’s family and team announced that they “are heartbroken to announce that Bonnie unexpectedly passed away” Wednesday night in a hospital in Portugal “as a result of the illness that she was being treated for.” Tyler’s unexpected death comes after she needed emergency surgery and was hospitalized in Portugal since April after being misdiagnosed earlier in the U.K. She arrived at Portugal in late April, where for decades she used to spend part of the year in her house in Algarve. After realizing she was still unwell she visited a doctor in Portugal, which immediately sent her to the hospital due to the seriousness of her condition. At the hospital she had emergency surgery and doctors put her into a medically induced coma to help with her recovery. After rumors that she was finally recovering, Tyler passed away unexpectedly while still hospitalized on the evening of July 8th at age 75.
Bonnie Tyler was born Gaynor Hopkins on 8 June 1951 in Neath, Wales. Known for her distinctive husky voice. Tyler came to prominence with the release of her 1977 album “The World Starts Tonight” and its singles “Lost in France” and “More Than a Lover.” Her 1978 single “It’s a Heartache” reached number four on the UK Singles Chart, and number three on the US Billboard Hot 100. During the 1980’s she reached the pinnacle of her popularity with the 1983 smash hit “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the lead single from her 1983 UK chart-topping album “Faster Than the Speed of Night.” During that period, she ventured into a more Rock direction (Tyler’s two biggest influences from a young age were Janis Joplin and Tina Turner) with songs like “Holding Out for a Hero” and “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man).” In 1986 she scored another hit with “Loving You’s a Dirty Job (But Somebody’s Gotta Do It)” in duet with Todd Rundgren. Tyler represented the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest 2013 with the song “Believe in Me.” With sales in excess of six million each, her work has earned her three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations, among other accolades. During the 1990’s she started a collaboration with German producer and songwriter Dieter Bohlen (Modern Talking), which resulted in three albums that achieved minor success in mainland Europe but failed to chart in the U.K or the U.S. By the late 1990’s the partnership had dissolved, and Tyler went back to record new songs and release several compilations. She remained a very active touring artist for the rest of her life. Since 1988, Tyler and her husband owned a five-bedroom home in Albufeira, Portugal. Tyler had recorded one of her albums there in the late 1970’s, and the couple spend the better part of the year there. They also invested in real estate and as of 1999 they owned farmland in Portugal and New Zealand, 22 houses in Royal Berkshire and London, and 65 stables offering horse boarding services. Recently, Tyler was rushed to an emergency surgery procedure in Portugal. Rumors about her health spread quickly on social media, the family finally issued a statement she was recovering.
