Tommy James and The Shondells score another No.1 in 1968 with “Mony Mony”

Written by Tommy James, Bo Gentry, Ritchie Cordell and Bobby Bloom, “Mony Mony” by Tommy James and The Shondells was released in March 1968 backed with “One Two Three and I Fell”, and remains one of the 1960’s most popular Garage Rock songs. The famous song, whose title was inspired by Tommy James’ view of the “M.O.N.Y.” sign atop the Mutual of New York Building on the New York City skyline from his Manhattan apartment, became another big hit for Tommy James and The Shondells, reaching for the second time No.1 at the U.K singles charts on August 21, 1968. Though it was covered by several artists, it’s the 1987 Billy Idol’s version that remains the most popular, reaching also No.1 at the Hot 100, curiously replacing another Tommy James hit at No. 1, “I Think We’re Alone Now”, covered by Tiffany. Other hits for Tommy James and The Shondells includes “Crimson And Clover”, “Sweet Cherry Wine” and “Crystal Blue Persuasion”.
