In 1966, with “Monday, Monday”, The Mamas and the Papas peak to No.1 for the first and last time on the U.S Hot 100
The Mamas and The Papas had an incredible string of Pop hits during the late 1960’s, that became absolute classics and defining of the modern pop music style. With their unique vocal style and mellow music, their music was neither psychedelic, rock or folk, was a blend between all those three main genres that dominated the charts at the time. But even with all the memorable hits and chart success, the band only achieved No.1 on the U.S Hot 100 with one song, “Monday, Monday”. Written by John Phillips, who claimed to wrote song in only 20 minutes, “Monday, Monday” was released as the follow up to The Mamas and the Papas signature song “California Dreamin'” in March 1966 backed with “Got a Feelin'”. Both singles were included on their successful 1966 debut album “If You Can Believe Your Eyes and Ears”. It quickly climbed the charts and on May 7, 1966 peaked to No.1 on the U.S Hot 100. The song was also a worldwide success, specially across Europe where it was released in some countries as part of a four track EP (a common practice in Europe back then) including “California Dreamin'”. In 1967, “Monday, Monday” was awarded a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo our Group with Vocal. It was also performed live and filmed during the famous 1967 Monterey Pop Festival but never included in the final print of the now iconic film of the festival. Some of The Mamas and the Papas biggest hits include the already mentioned “California Dreamin'”, “I Saw Her Again”, “Dedicated To The One I Love”, “Creeque Alley” and “Twelve Thirty (Young Girls Are Coming to the Canyon)” among many others.
