Looking back at the music of singer-songwriter Paula Cole

Singer-songwriter Paula Cole turns 56 today

Singer-songwriter Paula Cole was born on April 5, 1968, in Rockport, Massachusetts. Cole rose to prominence in the mid-’90s in the wake of alternative’s commercial breakthrough. Drawing heavily from the ethereal, pretty sound of Sarah McLachlan and Tori Amos, she created songs that relied equally on dreamy melodies and poetic, introspective lyrics. Although she continued recording music into the next millennium, Cole’s career reached its peak in 1997, when both “I Don’t Want to Wait” and “Where Have All the Cowboys Gone?” cracked the Top 20. Her song “I Don’t Want to Wait” was used as the theme song of the television show Dawson’s Creek. Cole toured with Sarah McLachlan’s Lilith Fair. Cole was nominated for several Grammy Awards in 1997. Among them was “Producer of the Year” (Cole was the third woman to ever be nominated in this category after Janet Jackson in 1990 and Mariah Carey in 1992); she did not win, but she did go on to win “Best New Artist” that same year.
