Engelbert Humperdinck was born Arnold George Dorsey on May 2, 1936, in Madras, British India, he would later adopt the stage name Engelbert Humperdinck, drawing inspiration from the 19th-century composer of the opera “Hansel and Gretel.”
Humperdinck rose to stardom in the 1960s when he emerged as a charismatic and talented crooner. With his smooth baritone voice and irresistible charm, he quickly captivated audiences around the world. His early hits, including “Release Me,” and “The Last Waltz,” skyrocketed to the top of the charts, earning him widespread acclaim and establishing him as a global sensation. In early 1967, his version of “Release Me” topped the charts in the United Kingdom and hit No. 4 on the US Billboard 100. the record kept the Beatles’ “Strawberry Fields Forever”/”Penny Lane” from the top slot in the United Kingdom (for the first time since 1963).
Throughout the 1970s and beyond, Humperdinck continued to enjoy success with a string of hit songs and albums. His romantic ballads, such as “After the Lovin'” and “Spanish Eyes,” struck a chord with listeners, cementing his reputation as one of the premier entertainers of his generation.
