Considered by many as the last of the great Rolling Stones albums, “Goats Head Soup” was released on August 31, 1973. To be or not the last of the great Stones records can be disputed as they still released good solid hit albums such as “It’s Only Rock N’ Roll” in 1974 and “Some Girls” in 1978, never the less, remains one of the bands absolute classics. The album was recorded in Jamaica and the Netherlands between 1972 and 1973, under the production of Jimmy Miller that had been the bands producer since 1968 “Beggars Banquet”, this would be Miller’s last collaboration with the band though. This 1973 release of the Stones marks little changing in the band’s musical direction. It reflects the effort of the band trying to stay relevant by doing songs such as “Dancing With Mr. D”, “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” or the smash hit “Angie”. Rich in percussion (Jamaican influenced) and the use of brass instruments on some tracks. A fresh and rich Stones work that goes from wild to mild, swinging between solid rock songs and ballads, featuring the usual gang of collaborators Nicky Hopkins and Ian Stewart on piano, Billy Preston on clavinet and also piano, Bobby Keys on tenor saxophone makes this an official “Stones golden era” album.
